Organic Recycling Systems has spent 18 years converting municipal solid waste,\u00a0one of the hardest feedstocks in bioenergy,\u00a0into clean fuel. As India mandates CBG blending across its gas networks, that depth of experience is becoming its most valuable asset.<\/em><\/p>\n

New Delhi [India], April 30:<\/strong> India generates over\u00a062-72\u00a0million tonnes of municipal solid waste every year<\/strong>. Most of it rots in open dumps. A company from Navi Mumbai has spent\u00a018\u00a0years<\/strong>\u00a0turning that problem into an energy solution,\u00a0and is only now beginning to get the attention it deserves.<\/p>\n

Organic Recycling Systems Limited\u00a0started as a waste management firm. Today, it\u00a0has transitioned into\u00a0an\u00a0integrated\u00a0CleanTech\u00a0and decarbonisation platform, converting\u00a0agricultural waste, energy crops,\u00a0and\u00a0organic fraction of\u00a0municipal waste into\u00a0compressed biogas (CBG)\u00a0and value-added\u00a0products<\/strong><\/span>. The shift is not just in branding. In 2013, the company commissioned\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0anaerobic digestion-based integrated MSW valorisation facility in Solapur<\/strong>, Maharashtra,\u00a0at a time when most of the sector was still figuring out what was possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sarang Bhand, the Promoter and Managing Director\u00a0<\/strong>who has led the company since its inception,\u00a0frames the opportunity in stark terms.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>Every tonne of municipal waste that goes into a landfill is a tonne of clean energy that India has to import instead. That is the equation we are trying to change.<\/em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

MSW is among the most complex feedstocks in the bioenergy value chain\u00a0\u2013\u00a0heterogeneous, seasonally variable, and unforgiving of process errors. ORSL\u2019s 18 years on this feedstock, across multiple states and project types, is reflected in its technology stack:\u00a02 patents, 5+ proprietary technologies, and 7+ innovations<\/strong>\u00a0currently in its R&D pipeline.<\/p>\n

ORSL serves leading clients such as\u00a0Indian Oil Corporation<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Bharat Petroleum<\/strong>, along with municipal corporations across the country.It has formal research partnerships with\u00a0IIT Bombay<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0IIT Kharagpur<\/strong>, and was recently awarded a\u00a0DBT-BIRAC grant of Rs 1.86 crore<\/strong>\u00a0to develop India\u2019s first BIO-CCU platform,\u00a0a system that captures CO\u2082 from biogas plants and converts it into value-added fuels, in collaboration with both IITs.\u00a0The company was listed on the BSE SME platform in 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s National Biofuels Coordination Committee has mandated\u00a01%\u00a0CBG blending in CNG and PNG networks from FY 2025-26, rising to 5 per cent by FY 2028-29.[2]<\/sup>For ORSL, 18 years of converting waste into energy may prove to be its most durable advantage.<\/p>\n
